Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Now that I am attending the School of Makeup Effects in South Amboy, I realize how true this saying is! While some may not believe in investing in makeup schools, pro makeup artists of the world have been furthering their education in their craft for years.
I’m a firm believer that in order to be at ones greatest potential, there should be fundamentals in whatever one decides to do in life. Weather it’s hair, modeling, acting, etc or makeup! There are no shortcuts or overnight achievements, unless you’re a one hit wonder. I don’t want to be an overnight internet sensation. I want to put in the work and put in the hours so that I can learn and grow. I did it with TV hosting, acting and modeling. Now, I’m doing it with makeup because I want to rise above just being an “influencer.” I aspire to inspire with my actions.
You see a lot of “self taught” people all over social media, especially in the YouTube world. I have a lot of respect for these people for entering the world of entrepreneurship. However, what you don’t realize is what works for them may not work for you. It also may not be working for them either if you want to be technical. Why? Well, makeup isn’t just apply and go. It a lot more than that, its complex yet interesting.
I’ve been in makeup artistry school for a little over a week now and I must say I’ve learned so much. We’ve covered color theory, face and eye shapes, skin types, highlighting and contour, application and hygiene. Sounds like a lot but here’s still a ton left to cover in my Basic & Advanced course. If you haven’t read my last two posts, read: Why I Went Back To School & Overcoming My Fear .
I choose to go to School of Makeup Effects because I knew I’d be learning from some of the best in the industry. My professor Lindsey studied and taught at one of the biggest makeup artistry schools in NYC, and is currently a professional makeup artist in the world of entertainment. Not only am I going to school to learn, but I want to start off on the right foot— especially if I intend on making this a second career inside and outside the YouTube world.
