I was very excited to try one of Starbucks secret menu items: The Purple Drink. I saw an article in my newsfeed about it, noted its luscious pastel color and creamy consistency and then hopped right over to my local Jersey City Starbucks. “I’ll have the purple drink,” I told the barista, who looked confused. But another had overheard my order and said “Oh, that’s the Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher.” Sounded pretty secret to me! But when my drink arrived it was purple indeed, but lacked the creamy consistency that I was looking forward to. Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious and all but not what I was expecting. Was I remembering wrong? I wasn’t. But I had made a rookie mistake, which I discovered after Googling the drink again and reading this piece in People by my former InStyle.com colleague Grace Gavilanes. The key to ordering a secret drink, she informs us, is to actually tell the barista the ingredients you want in the cup. So it is back to Starbucks for me, where I will order “a Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher with soy milk instead of water.” Let’s hope it will be worth the wait.
