It may be the most highly anticipated event of the year. No, it’s not the presidential election, but rather the release of the annual IKEA catalog. People wait around for months to see what new products will be coming out and how they can creatively (and inexpensively) decorate their homes.
In fact it has become so popular, the Swedish company even created a five-minute video prior to the August 8 (August 15 online) release of the catalog to preview the collection. “We know that there are certain people that actually sit at home and kind of wait, and do the countdown maybe two weeks in advance,” said one of the employees in the film. “We’ve challenged ourselves to make this year our best one yet,” added another.
While we’ll have to wait to actually purchase one of these teased items from the mega stores in Elizabeth and Paramus, the mini movie gave us a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating the catalog and the design process. They even revealed the 2017 theme: “Goodbye expectations. Hello you.” “It doesn’t have to be picture perfect all the time,” said another employee.
The catalog takes 18 months to make and is translated into 33 languages, reaching 255 million people around the globe. “If I’m excited about it, that means someone else has to be, too,” added an employee.
Now we’re excited! Who is down for the ball pit and some Swedish meatballs?
