Halsey talks about singing onstage after secret miscarriage: ‘Angriest performance I’ve ever done’

Halsey, the popular singer from Washington Township who was our recent Woman Crush Wednesday, recently revealed some heartbreaking news in a Rolling Stone interview: last year, she suffered a miscarriage. The artist, whose real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, released her debut album, Badlands, in 2015, which rocketed to second on the Billboard 200 chart.

But fame hasn’t meant an instantly perfect life. In the interview, she said her stage name was inspired by the Brooklyn subway stop at Halsey Street. “I didn’t like being Ashley Frangipane. It was a person I thought was weak and silly and sad,” she explained.

While on tour in Chicago in 2015, she found out she was pregnant, and wasn’t sure what she was going to do. As she put it, “What happens? Do I lose my record deal? Do I lose everything? Or do I keep [the pregnancy]?  But the decision was made for her when she found herself bleeding hours before she was expected to go onstage.

Rather than canceling the gig, she took two Percocet and went on with the show. “It’s the angriest performance that I’ve ever done in my life. That was the moment of my life where I thought to myself, ‘I don’t feel like a fucking human being anymore,'” Halsey revealed.

She does look forward to starting a family one day, and told the magazine, “I want to be a mom more than I want to be a pop star. More than I want to be anything in the world.”

She also Tweeted about the revelation, thanking fans for their support and sounding hopeful.
