Mary J. Blige and Kendu Isaacs to divorce after 12 years

Say it ain’t so! After nearly 13 years of marriage, singer Mary J. Blige and husband Martin “Kendu” Isaacs are calling it quits. On Tuesday, The 45-year-old Saddle River resident filed for divorce in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences as the reasoning behind their split.

The “No More Drama” singer does not want Kendu to receive spousal support and has asked the court to terminate their ability to grant it to him.

“Ms. Blige is saddened to say it is true that she has filed for divorce, saying sometimes things don’t work how we hoped they would… but there is a divine plan and a reason for everything,” Mary’s rep released in a statement, according to Us Weekly. “Mary will continue writing and working on her album, which is due out later this year, along with her world tour. She thanks and appreciates her fans for their support and love through this very difficult emotional time.”

The couple wed in 2003 and have no children together. The nine-time Grammy Award winner has proudly taken the responsibility of stepmother to Kendu’s children Briana, Jordan and Nas. Newark native and Academy Award winner Queen Latifah introduced them during a studio session.

Little details have been revealed about the separation. In the past, the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul” thanked Kendu for saving her life. During a period where she was “spinning out of control and suicidal,” Kendu helped her to find the beauty within herself.

“He was the first person to ever challenge what I did: ‘Why are you drinking? Why do you hate yourself? You don’t need to be around people who tear you down. You’re beautiful, Mary.’ He was the first man to ever tell me that,” Mary told Parade.
