If you’re a product of the ’90s then it’s hard to imagine R&B’s greatest acts without mentioning Aaliyah ‘Baby Girl’ Haughton. Fifteen years ago the world lost a gem in the entertainment industry during a fatal airplane crash in the Bahamas. But her influence on music, fashion and more lives on. On this somber anniversary, no one expressed it better than her mentor and frequent collaborator Missy Elliott.

The Kinnelon resident posted a haunting black and white photo on Instagram of the late singer, who was only 22 when she died. “15 years later to me feels like just yesterday,” she wrote on Instagram. “I can still hear your laughter, I can clearly see us dancing in the studio me u @timbaland @ginuwine Magoo the whole clique we miss u so much there’s not a day u aren’t thought of!

We couldn’t agree more, Missy. The Brooklyn native holds a special place in the hearts of Jersey girls everywhere! Here’s why we will never stop loving the “One in a Million” songstress.

She had the voice of an angel
After releasing her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, we were hooked! When it came to making good music, Aaliyah had no problem delivering  the hits. When she teamed up with famed producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott, things only got better. She found a way to express emotions that left feeling vulnerable one moment and unstoppable the next. Her music continues to sell to this day.

Style was her second language
Aaliyah’s personal style spoke volumes with every project she was a part of. You would often catch the singer in baggy, yet comfortable, clothing but also mixed it with sexy pieces.”I stay true to myself and my style, and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original,” according to InspiringQuotes.com.

She was a ray of sunshine
The ‘Princess of R&B’ was also a ball of positive energy. Whether we were watching her engage in an interview, accepting an award or getting caught on camera in behind-the-scenes footage, Aaliyah always had a smile on her face. Not only did the multi-platinum selling artist promote positive vibes, but she also encouraged her fans to be confident in the skin they’re in.

Your legacy will live on forever!
