A list of local celebrities ranked by their Garden State pride might be somewhat subjective, but it’s difficult to argue against the person in the top spot. When Thrillist recently released the epic list, which couldn’t have been an easy feat considering how many celebs are proud to call New Jersey home— we couldn’t help but agree with the number one choice. Who’s that girl? Whitney Houston, duh.

Sure Bruce Springsteen, who also made the list, may be worthy of the position too, but Whitney “posthumously turned out to be the proudest Jersey celeb of all,” according to Thrillist. Born in Newark, raised in East Orange, and having lived in Mendham– the late singer always considered New Jersey home. Speaking of Mendhan, her house there “reportedly was architecturally inspired by Newark Airport (if that’s not state pride, I don’t know what is),” Thrillist claims.

According to Thrillist, “Governor Chris Christie flew New Jersey’s flags at half-staff when she died, and though he was widely criticized, he defended his decision by calling her a “daughter of New Jersey.” For these reasons, Whitney was definitely the right choice.
