Beauty products can be expensive. While many claim to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and will make your skin look like a baby’s, you don’t necessarily want to pay top dollar. Well, you don’t have to! There are actually some items in your kitchen pantry right now that can make the perfect soothing face and body mask.
Becky Tountas, a certified holistic health coach who summers at the Jersey Shore, let’s us in on her little secret about the ultimate DIY beauty products that she uses to nourish her skin especially during the colder months. All you need is oatmeal and honey.
“Oatmeal has long been a staple among skin professionals,” says Becky. “Its skin-soothing powers were known as early as 2000 BC, and to this day, the FDA cites it as effective for relieving dryness and inflammation, including stings, rashes, and eczema. Oatmeal is also great for exfoliating and cleaning the skin, and some claim that it helps with acne.”
She adds, “If you are using oatmeal for skin purposes, the best is to use real oats. The instant oatmeal is fine if you have nothing else, but make sure that it is completely unflavored.”
Honey and Oatmeal Mask:
- Mix ground oatmeal with water. Add honey. Put paste on face. Wait 15 minutes. Wash off! Viola!
“Legend has it that Cleopatra used honey for her skin and beauty treatments as she bathed in milk and honey,” Becky tells OMJ. “Honey is highly moisturizing and soothing, and is great for dry skin. It is also highly antibacterial so can treat and prevent acne and has antioxidant components.” Here are some ways to use it.
- Apply a thin layer of honey to your skin and then wash it off after about 30 minutes.
- Add a cup of honey into your bath and soak.
Simple Honey Hair Treatment:
- There are many recipes for mixing honey for various oils for hair, but one of the simplest is to mix honey with water just enough to thin it out. When it is a good consistency, apply to hair and let it sit for 30 mins before rinsing out.
