We know Bruce Springsteen and his wife Patti Sciafla as one of the strongest couples in Hollywood, but it wasn’t always so perfect. The Boss opens up in his new memoir Born to Run, out on September 27, about his first disastrous marriage and falling for his now wife.
Bruce married actress Julianne Phillips in 1985 describing her in rather less than romantic terms. ”She was twenty-four, tall, blond, educated, talented, a beautiful and charming young woman,” he wrote. But, quickly after saying “I do” he admitted to having panic attacks and realized that he was in fact in love with his bandmate Patti after years of performing together.
The musician described her as a “formidable partner” who “did not live to make you feel safe” and revealed how he was intensely attracted to her. “Patti had a part that carried a charged sexuality; she could seduce and she could stir you to jealousy,” he wrote.
Though Bruce had found his true love, that didn’t mean things went smoothly. “I dealt with Julie’s and my separation abysmally,” he wrote. “I made a tough thing more heartbreaking than necessary.” He split from Julianne in 1989 and married Patti just a few years later in 1991. After years of ups and downs on the road, the two finally hit their stride and have become an example of a happy marriage in the tumultuous rock n roll.
