New Jersey is filled with tons of delicious restaurants, but we recently rounded up the top five most expensive ones in Bergen County. While they are obviously all amazing in their own right (and worth the high price tag), one spot delighted OMJ readers the most: Café Matisse.
Located in Rutherford, the upscale restaurant prides itself on serving up artful American cuisine. Chef Peter Loria is so proud of his dishes, diners can only order from a variety of tasting menus ranging from $68-$108 per person. The menu is frequently updated using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients and all food the food is prepared fresh for each evening’s reservations.
“In New York, this restaurant would still be a hit,” wrote one Yelp reviewer. My favorites were the scallops and foie gras, the panko crab cakes, the chorizo mac and cheese, and my tropical dessert,” wrote another.
More than the food, visitors can’t get over the Henri Matisse inspired dining room and enchanting European Garden patio. Impressionist-style paintings hang on the walls along with playful and colorful chandeliers, giving a whimsical feel. “From the moment we entered, our senses were welcomed into a cocoon of fragrance and artistry,” wrote another patron.
Clearly this place has caught the attention of more than just Garden Staters. It was ranked in the famous Zagat guide as one of the best restaurants in New Jersey in 2015 and received a food scoring as high at NYC’s famous Marea. And they also received an Open Table Diner’s Choice 2015 award being cited as “incredibly unique.”
Oh, and did we mention it’s BYOB? Yeah, this place is pretty much perfect for that special date night or milestone celebration.
