It’s tailgating season!

It’s that time of year. No, not Halloween or pumpkin spice latte season (while we do love those), but rather football season. If you find yourself spending every Sunday donning your team’s jersey and yelling at the TV, you know you’re in the full swing of things. More than the entertainment of watching the game, there’s one part of football season we love the most: the food.

Tailgating has long been one of America’s past times and there’s no better place to chow down on some of the best pre-game foods than in New Jersey. Here are some of our favorite places for the greasiest, cheesiest and most delicious game grub in Hudson County.

1. Natoli’s Deli, Secaucus

This place is perfect to grab everything you need for tailgating. Why? Well, for one the portions are huge and they have many different options on the menu that you will want to try everything. If you want to get a sandwich, the mozzarella is very fresh (they make it daily). Or, if you want classic football food there are wings, sliders, quesadillas, chicken fingers, pizza and much more. They cater for events as well, so whether you need food for 10 or 50, this place caters to your needs. The Buffalo Fried Chicken Cutlet sandwich is to die for.

2. Black Bear Bar & Grill, Hoboken

Why host your own tailgate party when you can just watch all the games from the comfort of a restaurant? Black Bear Bar & Grill is home to one of the biggest TV displays around and they haveSunday specials for those that are watching the game. Think $4 Blue Moon pints, $6 Jack Daniels mixed drinks and shots, $6 ‘Manmosas’ (a mixture of champagne, Blue Moon, orange juice, and orange flavored vodka), and $11.99 Coors Light pitchers. As for the food, they offer Sunday specials like the “extraordinary burger,” which is a bacon cheeseburger between two grilled cheeses. You’ll also want to try the Southern BBQ wrap complete with marinated grilled steak with bacon, onions, and cheddar jack while The wings, nachos, and Hoboken Burger are all must orders too. The menu is extensive; there is everything from burgers to wraps to salads and mac ‘n’ cheese. Go team!

3. PJ Ryan’s Tavern, Jersey City

This place is way beyond bar food and the head chef is truly a “chef” so there are plenty of interesting specials to try. The appetizer that’s perfect for tailgating are the Chorizo Beef Sliders; they have a little bit of heat from the chorizo and the chipotle peppers are very good. The Bratwurst is served on a pretzel bun with spicy mustard infused with Guinness. The nachos are above average and nothing you get here will disappoint.

4. Chicken Delight, North Bergen

Wings are the epitome of tailgating foods.

Wings are the quintessential tailgating food, so this place is the best place to go. Since 1981, they have been serving the best chicken, fried, barbecued, and grilled. Their buffalo wings are award winning while their Baby Back Ribs just fall off the bone (drool). The coleslaw is made daily along with the mac and cheese and the Buffalo wing sauce is their own secret recipe that cannot be found anywhere else. You guessed it – the menu is mostly chicken but there are ribs and a fish filet sandwich along with rice, mashed potatoes, fries, and other delicious sides.

5. Red White & Que Smokehouse, Kearny

BBQ and beer just go together. This menu has a lot of meat like pork, ribs, brisket, chicken, and more. The beef brisket is really the star attraction. Of course, there are sandwiches and Buffalo wings to top it all off. Don’t forget the homemade sides – potato salad, cornbread, fried smokehouse pickles. Yum!
