We all indulge a little too much on Thanksgiving. How can you not? Between the turkey, stuffing and apple pie there’s every reason in the world to stuff your face. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t be healthy during the holiday.
To combat that guilty feeling, make a plan with family or friends to get a good workout in over the weekend and maybe even give thanks to a local charity. How? By signing up for one of the awesome road races in north Jersey. Typically called turkey trots, these runs are the perfect way to run off that second (or third) helping of dinner and keep you on healthy track.
Here are some of our favorite races to sign up for this year.
Run a 5K the morning of Thanksgiving and then you will be able to reward yourself with a big Thanksgiving dinner. It is on a USATF Certified course starting and ending at the Glen Rock Municipal Pool. There is also a kid’s run that starts at 9:45am so all of the family can be together. There is a $30 race fee plus $2.75 sign-up fee.
This Thanksgiving race is a way to burn some calories, catch up with neighbors, help the community and go home with a great looking t-shirt. They will provide top-notch awards, a complimentary t-shirt, and a super spread of post-race refreshments. The course is also USATF certified and is a single loop with both hilly and flat portions. Check in is at 7:30am with a 9am start time for the 5K race. Pre-registration entry fee is $30, while day of registration is $35. It is located at 392 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River.
Prepare yourself a head of time for all the turkey you’re going to eat by running in this 5K race on November 19. The race takes place along the picturesque waterfront, which is a great view for when you’re running. There is also a 1-mile fun run at 9:30am for those that don’t want to run the full 5K. The 1-mile fun run is $19 plus $2.50 sign-up fee while the 5K run starts at 10am and costs $30-$35 (plus $3 sign-up fee) online or $40 same day registration. The fee includes a dry fit shirt for the first 500 registered runners.
The Fort Lee Thanksgiving Day Run is a 5K run through the town of Fort Lee on November 24 starting and ending at the Fort Lee Community Center. It’s a great middle ground if you have family in both Hudson and Bergen Counties.
Feeling a little competitive? There will be awards given for the top 3 male and female finishers of this 5K race on November 19, and the top three male and female finishers in each age group. The course includes rolling hills but has water stops and there will be post-race refreshments. It starts at 9am and is $23 plus $2.75 sign-up fee.
