Meet the celebrity hair stylist behind ‘Jersey Shore’ hair

Finding a hair extension specialist is just as important these days as finding the right school for your kids. Maybe we’re exaggerating a tad (actually we’re not!). That’s why Jersey Shore stars Jenni “JWoww” Farley and Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola entrust their gorgeous manes in the hands of Joei D Fox. The celebrity hair stylist has been the woman behind their most fabulous ‘dos for the past 15 years. I stopped by her rock’n roll chic salon Sniptease Hair Studio to chat with the successful hair guru and entrepreneur and have Joei give my locks a Jersey Shore approved blowout.

Joei has been transforming women into rockstars for over a decade. She got her start managing a hair salon when she was only 15 years old! She tells me she knew from a young age that she wanted to become a stylist after seeing her mom, a beauty school dropout, always doing hair. After graduating, she worked all over, even moving to Florida for a brief time. She finally settled into her home state, opening up Sniptease in 2011 at the ripe age of 23.

Just three months into her new business, the chance of a lifetime walked into her door, the cast of Jersey Shore. “I got pretty lucky because when I first opened, the girls from the Jersey Shore just walked in and I ended up fixing Sammi’s hair on the show,”  she tells me. “Then they all just started coming in. It was super random and I was just really good at extensions. It was kind of my niche that no one else was doing. It just blew me up from there.”

Although a full service salon, Sniptease is most known for their innovative and unique hair extension services. They are certified in over 20 different brands from Great Lengths, and Cinderella, to So Cap and She Extensions. The ladies at Sniptease can do it all, from cylinder, strips, sewing, and fused hair pieces. Joei, who is also a certified color master from the Wella Studio, tells me she gets most excited when working on clients with extensions, “I love the whole wow before and after. Getting a full head of hair, women are just so excited.”

Joei, who recently styled actor Danny Trejo during a movie shoot in Long Branch, tells me it is so important to do your homework before making the plunge into extensions. “You really have to find someone and see the work they do. A lot of people say they can do it and then can’t,” she says. “You really need the experience. It has to be very custom and personalized. That’s the only way its going to be safe for your hair.”

Joei has been working with Jenni and Sammi ever since Season 3 of Jersey Shore, and has made regular appearances on the MTV smash-hit, in addition to Jenni’s spinoff with bestie Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Snooki and Jwoww.

While Joei says Sammi has held on to her signature straight (and gorgeous may we add) tresses for years, Jenni on the other hand loves to change it up. Joei, who is so tight with the mom-of-two she was a bridesmaid in her wedding, tells me she recently chopped off Jenni’s long locks in favor of a more chic and easy to manage ‘do.

“The babies pull on her hair all the time so she just needed something different, and honestly it just looks awesome,” she says. “I love the short hair on her. We slowly got shorter, shorter, and shorter.”

Yasssssss thank you @joeidfox @snipteasehair you brought it back to life ????????????????????????

Joei tells me Jenni has always been a chameleon with her hair, and is always game to try something different. “We had pink tips and we used wigs, she says. “Jenni varies so much. The gray thing was in for a little bit so we did that for couple months.”

That gray trend is turning to white now Joei tells me. The hot hair trends she’s seeing is white, almost silver hair, and just like Jenni, women are going shorter and shorter back to the old-school Victoria Beckham style.

But don’t think that doesn’t mean ladies still aren’t looking to add length still or go for a more bold color. Joei recently had a client in her 60’s turn her hair into a rainbow. “We’re very funky and upbeat,” she tells me. “Most people think that we have a younger clientele but we really don’t. We do mostly 40 and up.”

The 28-year-old stylist loves extensions so much that she’s in the process of creating her own line called Fox Locks. In addition, the mom-of-one already has a line of fabulous all-natural hair products, which both Jenni and Sammi love.

“We do a lot of blondes. We’re at the shore, everybody wants to be blonde. so we have the purple shampoo and conditioner,” she says. “And I have a hair spray that you can turn it to three different holds. Instead of buying the firm hold or the soft hold, you can spin it to where it will be different holds.”

Despite her ultra busy schedule (she was just in London styling alternative mode Lusy Logan), Joei is showing no signs of slowing down. She and the girls of Sniptease are packing up shop come the new year and relocating into bigger and better digs right down the street. The new salon and spa will be six times the size, two stories, and will have new additions like a full extension bar, nails, spray tanning, and waxing.

“I’m 28 years old. The last thing I want to do is stop. I enjoy the craziness. It keeps me motivated.” she tells me. “I’ve done so much in the past 5 years. I can’t wait to grow and would like to go international.”
