Inside Hartly boutique: The mini-department store that is Bergen County’s best kept secret

Hartly, Westwood’s one-stop shop, has been outfitting Bergen County’s finest for the past 60 years. This high-end boutique caters to the fashion-conscious women, and carries a unique assortment of pieces from casual and contemporary, to red carpet ready. I stopped by the Westwood Avenue staple to chat with owner Sloane Hartly to find out more about this fabulous mini-department store (and of course do a little shopping myself!).

Sloane is the fourth generation of the family-owned business. She began training with her aunt and mentor Susan Hartly when she was just 26 years old. She tells me the store has evolved over the years, and right now their niche is high-fashion womenswear.

“We have designer sportswear as well as dressy formalwear, dresses for parties but then also weddings,”  she says. “We have the largest selection of dressy designer clothing in the Bergen County area.”

Hartly is essentially a mini-deparment store. The 4,000 square foot shop, chicly decorated of course, carries a huge variety of sportswear, formalwear, dresses, accessories, makeup, and they even do alterations.

“We’re built on, and it still exists, that you walk in the door and you have your personal stylist who meets and greets you and then they help you, and they get to know you and what you like, and what you’re looking for. Then they’ll take you into the dressing room and they’ll help outfit you from head to toe,” she tells me. “Our customers love that because when they go into their closet, they know exactly what they’re going to wear and they feel good.”

The Tenafly resident makes weekly trips into NYC to handpick the perfect styles with her clients in mind, from top designers like Prabal Gurung, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, Missoni, Zimmermann, Rag & Bone, and A.L.C. Sloane tells me she carries something for everyone.

“We really try and go into the market and really comb it to find the best of the best,” she says. “I try and find something for someone that wants to be economical and be trendy, and then buy things for the customer that want designer and imported fabrics.”

The busy mom-of-three tells me her store has become a destination for women. She not only outfits Bergen County’s most fashionable ladies, but she also has customers coming from all over;  Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester County, the Jersey Shore, and even Florida!

Sloane tells me her clients are extremely loyal. “We have customers here that started out coming here to get their Bat Mitzvah dress and now their granddaughter is coming in here. We have generations of customers. We love them, they’re really family for us.”

Hartly carries one of the biggest selections of formalwear in Bergen County. They even customize dresses and gowns for clients. Sloane tells me they host trunk shows almost every weekend where the designers bring in their complete collections.

“When you see these dresses, a lot of them come in different colors and you can change the sleeves, or we can change the necks. We do custom measure you, so when the dress or gown comes in it will be to your size.”

2017 looks to be an exciting year for Hartly. Sloane tells me they will be expanding, adding nearly 2,000 square feet of space. “We’re entering a very exciting new phase of Hartly.  We’re going to have new designers, we’re going to try and pull in more shoes and handbags, and lots of new exciting price points for our customers.”

One thing that won’t be changing is their devotion to their fabulous clients. Sloane tells me it is extremely gratifying for her to see everyone who enters through their doors happy.

“There’s nothing better than when our customer is in the dressing room and we find them this outfit, and when they look in the mirror they start smiling and they’re so happy,” she say. “There’s nothing better than being able to do that and make someone feel special or to feel really great about how they look.”
