It’s a hard job eating your way through a state just to find the best dishes available, but that’s just what NJ.com food critic Peter Genovese did in 2016. He scoured New Jersey to find the best Italian restaurants, ice cream, grilled cheeses, pizza, barbecue and more. Now, after all that “research” the foodie has just revealed his all-time 25 best dishes in the past year. Which meal topped the list?

Well, a roasted chicken dinner sub from Neil’s Kitchen in Long Branch took the No. 1 spot and was described as “like Thanksgiving in a sandwich” complete with homemade stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce. But, the No. 2 spot was taken by a north Jersey gem. Genovese loved the vanilla ice cream at Ice Cream by Mike in Hackensack. He called the confectionary a “tiny ice cream shop big on flavors.”

A few more north Jersey spots also made the list like the pork chops from Augustino’s Kitchen & Bar in Hoboken which came in at No. 8. Incredibly, the pork dumplings from Little Purse Dumpling Den in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport took the tenth spot. The roast beef and mozzarella sub from Fiore’s in Hoboken came in 13th, Pete’s Special Tuna sub from Andrea Salumeria in Jersey City was 15th and Sicilian rib-eye from Bottagra in Hawthorne was No. 19.

Seems like our New Year’s resolution is going to be eating all of these!
